Selecting Diamond for Wedding & Anniversary

In selecting diamond or valuable ornaments, buyers should inspect and compare products carefully. Apart from 4Cs, there are a lot of factors that should be taken into account. Selecting processes are as follows;

1. Identify Budget and Demand – Prior to gathering information about diamond, diamond ring, necklace, diamond pendant or dream ornaments for wedding, anniversary, Valentine’s gift, birthday gift, or personal gift, we should set approximate budget. For instance, when we need diamond ring for Valentine’s gift, how much budget we should set, what kind of diamond ring we need, single or detached style? In this case, we set 2,000 US Dollar budget for 1-carat diamond.

2. Gather more information and identify diamond specifications – According that diamond and diamond ring are expensive, 4Cs and information about relevant factors should be gathered. In decision making process, we need to prioritize the factors, for example, if we need extra white diamond, we specify Color as 98 (F) VS1 for Clarity, Very good for Cut or higher, HRD certificate, 2VG (Very good/Very good) for quality, Certificate from GIA/IGI institute, recommended quality should be 3VG (Very Good/Very Good/Very Good) or higher. Excellent grade of certificate from GIA, IGI is available as well. If we need moderate-grade diamond with big size, H/VVS2 is the good choice.

3. Market Survey – Once we set budget and identify diamond specifications, market survey is the next step. We can compare diamond prices from 2-3 shops and must compare diamonds of the same grade and quality, for instance, G/VS1 and E/VS1 are not comparable. Buyers are recommended to select diamond with certificate to ensure genuine diamond and quality.

4. Shop and Diamond Selection – Once we survey 2-3 shops and choose one that offer suitable price, quality and service, it’s time to select the diamond. 4Cs will not be considered as they are mentioned already in last article but I will refer to other factors that should be taken into account. First of all, you should see the certificate about fluorescent qualification of diamond, the slight or faint color is acceptable but medium or strong color is not, as its glittering appearance will be dull. Another point is about depth in which % of depth (diamond depth/diamond diameter) should not be higher than 63%, otherwise the face of diamond will become narrow. Moreover, thickness of diamond girdle should be Thin-Slightly thick, medium is acceptable but very thin, thick, very thick are not recommended. At this point, we have only a few qualified diamonds to choose.

5. Thoroughly inspect the Diamond – Final process of selection is to inspect each diamond carefully; check lasered certificate at the rim and examine number. Use loupe to inspect sealed diamond in terms of colored defects. Obvious defects may be contained in SI grade, lower than VS2. Buyer may not see obvious defects in VVS or VS grade. If defects are identified in certificate, the diamond with defects at the rim or rear side is superior to that of center defects.

6. Heart & Arrow inspection – To inspect Heart & Arrow, buyer should clearly see 8 clear equal arrows in front of the diamond and 8 equal heart shapes

7. Body Selection – Once diamond is selected, buyer can choose many types of body including white gold, pink gold or exclusive platinum (2-3 times more expensive that gold but it provides natural silver color that is not dull, but platinum may not flexible enough to be adjusted, so it is not recommended for those whose weights are fluctuated) Buyer should also test the ring as beautiful diamond may not suitable for our fingers.
